Soldiers were injured in an artillery exercise in Cauca

Four soldiers were injured in the middle of the training they were carrying out in the battalion located on the village of El Estrecho in the municipality of El Patía, in the south of the department of Cauca.

The uniformed they carried out a “practical exercise”, as the Army calls it, when the incident that is being investigated occurred and that left these four soldiers wounded.

Preliminary information indicates that possibly the accident in which the soldiers were injured was caused by handling a mortar-type grenade.

The Army confirmed the incident and although he has not provided further details of the facts, he stated that no civilians were injured.

The wounded personnel are part of the Mountain Battalion Number 4, who were in the village of Aguacatillo, rural area of ​​El Bordo-Patía, carrying out a practice exercise with mortar artillery.

“The issue is already part of the corresponding investigation. It could be that the grenade had more gunpowder than it is, or it could also be a failure of the mortar in its recoil mechanisms.”, said General John Rojas, commander of the Army’s Third Division.

In a video recorded by the community near the area of ​​the events, it is observed when A helicopter arrives in which the uniformed men were evacuated to different care centers in the city of Popayán where they were treated.

According to General Rojas, all the military are out of danger. “Some have some openings in their legs caused by the blast wave, one of those who is most beaten has a wound in one of his arms but all are out of danger”, detailed.

Meanwhile, the Third Division began the corresponding investigations to clarify what happened.
