A highly decorated Army Green Beret, identified as 37-year-old Matthew Livelsberger, was found dead inside a Tesla Cybertruck that exploded outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas on Wednesday. The blast injured seven peopel, but damage to the hotel was minimal.
Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill revealed that Livelsberger likely intended to cause more important damage, but the robust steel construction of the vehicle absorbed much of the force from the crude explosive device. The detonation primarily affected the interior of the truck, as the blast vented upwards instead of hitting the hotel doors.
“The level of sophistication is not what we would expect from an individual with this type of military experience,” said Kenny Cooper, special agent in charge for the bureau of Alcohol,Tobacco,Firearms and Explosives.
While the incident occurred in front of the trump hotel and involved a Tesla vehicle, FBI special agent in charge Spencer Evans stated, “we don’t have facts at this point that definitively tells us or suggests it was because of this particular ideology.”
A handgun was discovered at livelsberger’s feet, indicating a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He had recently returned from an overseas deployment in Germany and was on approved leave. Sources indicate that Livelsberger may have been involved in an argument with his wife about relationship issues shortly before renting the Tesla and purchasing firearms.
Although the remains were severely burned, IDs and tattoos provided strong indications that they belonged to Livelsberger. The Army confirmed his extensive service career, commencing in 2006. He had risen through the ranks, deploying twice to Afghanistan and serving in Ukraine, Tajikistan, Georgia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. his decorated record included five Bronze Stars, one with a valor device for courage under fire,a combat infantry badge, and an army Commendation Medal with valor.
Sheriff McMahill detailed Livelsberger’s travel route, outlining his rental of the electric vehicle in Denver on Saturday. Charging station records show he traveled through Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona before arriving in Las Vegas. Surveillance footage captured the vehicle on the Las Vegas Strip before the explosion. authorities confirmed that Livelsberger was alone in the vehicle.
Cindy Helwig, a neighbor, described livelsberger as “a normal guy” and recalled seeing him and his family earlier that week.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
