Yousef El Haouass and Salim Rhandi, two Moroccan adventurers, began their journey on Tuesday in Laayoune on a solar-powered quadricycle to the United Arab Emirates which will host the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on climate change (COP28).
This journey, which was kicked off by the secretary general of the wilaya of the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region, in the presence of association actors and representatives of Veolia Morocco, partner of this initiative, consists of reaching Dubai on a bike powered by solar energy combined with physical effort, passing through several European and Gulf countries, over a total distance of 15,000 kilometers.
Initiated by the Wamda association for innovation and creativity, with the support of the Veolia Morocco Group, this adventure aims to raise awareness at each of its stops regarding the importance of using renewable energies.
It also aims to promote the culture of the fight once morest global warming and encourage the adoption of sustainable behavior.
Adventurers at heart and thirsty for discovery, Yousef (55) and his friend Salim (47) have decided to take up the challenge of this unprecedented journey on a Moroccan-made solar-powered quadricycle.
Thus, following their departure from Laayoune, they plan to crisscross the cities of Sidi Ifni, Agadir, Marrakech and Rabat, before arriving in Tangier on August 26.
The environmental ambassadors will then cross the Strait of Gibraltar, passing through several European countries, namely Spain, France, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria and Turkey.
Subsequently, the two adventurers will travel by boat to Douba in Saudi Arabia, to begin a tour of the Gulf countries, before arriving in Dubai at the end of November, the final stage of their journey which coincides with the holding of the COP28.
In a statement to MAP, the president of the Wamda association for innovation and creativity, Mr. El Haouass explained that the city of Laayoune was chosen as the starting point of the journey because it is the chief place of the Moroccan Sahara.
“The Veolia Group has supported the project to build the bike with the various measures taken to guarantee the success of this crossing”, indicated Mr. El Haouass, inventor and designer of the solar quadricycle called “Ibn Battouta”.
For his part, Mr. Rhandi underlined that this trip aims to raise awareness regarding the protection of the environment and to promote the use of renewable energies, indicating that the quadricycle which runs at an average speed of 35 km/ h is equipped with five photovoltaic panels and GPS devices for tracking the route.
It should be recalled that Yousef Al-Hawas and Said Al-Jabbari took part in 2018 in a rally organized by the French association “The Sun Trip”, which consisted of linking the city of Lyon to Guangzhou in southern China, on Moroccan-made solar-powered bicycles.
