The solar energy sector in Brazil has stood out as one of the main alternatives for the energy transition and the reduction of carbon emissions. According to data from Brazilian Photovoltaic Energy Association (Absolar)investments in the sector have already exceeded R$200 billion, with distributed generation systems representing a significant part of this volume. These systems, installed on roofs and smaller lots, have been the main drivers of growth, serving both homes and small businesses.
According to Ronaldo Koloszuk, president of the Board of Directors of Absolar, “solar energy is the fastest growing source in Brazil, providing savings of up to 90% on the electricity bill and a quick return on investment, even more so with the drop of more than 40% in equipment prices in recent years.”
With more than 42 gigawatts (GW) of installed capacity, Brazil has already reached the equivalent to the generation of more than three Itaipu plants. The forecast is that by the end of 2024, installed capacity will exceed 45 GW, thanks to a favorable scenario driven by incentives for the use of renewable sources, increased demand and reduced equipment costs.
Canal Solar points out that, only in 2023, Brazil added 7.8 GW of installed capacity to the electrical matrixwith emphasis on solar energy. Due to the high temperatures and the growing heat wave that Brazil has been facing, consumers are increasingly motivated to seek alternatives to reduce electricity costs, further increasing adoption of distributed generation.
The impact of distributed generation and the contribution of companies
The distributed generation model, which allows consumers to generate their own energy and share the surplus with the electricity grid, has proven to be fundamental for the growth of solar energy in Brazil. Companies like Evosolar are contributing to this advancement by implementing solar energy solutions in different regions of the country.
