MONTREAL, March 1, 2024 – “This is an extremely unique situation, which requires concerted and informed decisions to be made. » The academic support sector of the Federation of Public Service Employees (FEESP-CSN), which represents the largest number of support employees in the education network, contacted the Federation of Service Centers schools so that it formulates clear instructions regarding the progress of the day of April 8, the day of the solar eclipse. According to information obtained by the FEESP-CSN, the federation still does not plan to issue a recommendation to this effect.

Over the past week, several school service centers (CSS) in Quebec announced their decision to suspend classes on April 8, while keeping daycare services open. “There is no logic in this decision. The CSS fear that teachers will not be able to manage students during the eclipse, but they are not worried regarding leaving them in daycare, even if the educator/student ratios explode in many years. schools,” says Annie Charland, president of the FEESP school support sector.

Like the Association for the Teaching of Science and Technology in Quebec (AESTQ), Annie Charland maintains that this rare phenomenon can constitute an interesting learning opportunity for students. But, she maintains at the same time that, to do this, recommendations must be communicated to all school staff immediately.

“The lack of consistency in the measures taken by various school service centers causes a lot of concern and creates insecurity for students, parents and workers in the education network. It takes clear and uniform lines for everyone,” concludes the president of the academic support sector of the FEESP-CSN.
