Solar balconies: Sustainable electricity from the balcony

2024-11-09 23:00:00

A solar balcony can save as much CO₂ as 16,000 newly planted trees absorb.

Electricity from the balcony has advantages over solar panels located on the roof. Because solar balconies do not get dirty – neither from pollen, Sahara sand, leaves or bird droppings. Thanks to their vertical position, they remain free of snow throughout. As soon as the sun is lower, they are more efficient. Solar modules are also not as sensitive to dirt and do not require maintenance.

Funding reduces costs for solar modules

“There is also currently a subsidy with 0% VAT on solar components, valid in Germany and Austria,” says Bernd Brenter from the family business Brenter Balconies in Oberndorf. The company has experience from 100 years of balcony construction. The appropriate balcony support system is developed here for all common PV modules. “Everything can be implemented, from a DIY balcony power plant to a large-scale professional system,” say the managing directors.

**Interview with Bernd Brenter, Managing Director of Brenter Balconies**

**Editor:**‌ Bernd, Germany has recently made headlines for installing over 550,000 solar panels on balconies. What inspired this initiative, and what are the main advantages of balcony ⁢solar panels over traditional rooftop installations?

**Bernd Brenter:** The inspiration for this initiative comes from the need to find‌ innovative ways to utilize urban spaces for renewable ⁣energy generation. Balcony solar panels are particularly advantageous as they remain cleaner than‍ rooftop panels⁢ due to their vertical position, minimizing the impact of dirt and snow. Additionally, they ‍are more efficient in low sun conditions, which can occur during‌ winter months.

**Editor:** That’s ‍fascinating!‌ You mentioned a subsidy of 0% VAT on solar components in Germany and Austria. How does this funding change the landscape for potential users of‍ balcony solar panels?

**Bernd Brenter:** The 0% VAT subsidy significantly lowers the⁢ initial investment for individuals interested in solar technology. This encourages more homeowners to consider adding solar panels to their⁢ balconies, making renewable energy more accessible to the average⁤ person. It also helps in promoting sustainability at a community level.

**Editor:** With such benefits, why do you think balcony solar panels aren’t more widely adopted outside of⁣ Germany and Austria?

**Bernd ⁣Brenter:** That’s ⁤a great question! Adoption may be hindered‍ by local regulations, lack of awareness, or simply the traditional preference⁢ for ⁤rooftop solar. It requires a cultural shift in how we think about personal energy production.

**Editor:**⁤ As we discuss‌ this, what ⁤would‌ you say to those⁤ who might have⁣ concerns about‌ the aesthetics of having solar panels on their balconies? Do you ‌think aesthetics‍ should play a ‌role in⁢ the decision to install them?

**Bernd Brenter:** Aesthetics can certainly be a concern for many. But I ‌believe that as technology advances, solar panels are becoming more visually appealing. People should weigh the environmental benefits and cost savings against ⁣aesthetics, ‍but I think as awareness grows, the acceptance of balcony solar panels will increase.

**Editor:** Lastly, ⁤for those considering it, what advice would you give them about investing in balcony solar panels?

**Bernd Brenter:** My biggest piece of advice is to do thorough research. Understand your balcony’s orientation, local regulations,⁢ and available subsidies. It’s also beneficial to connect with companies that have a proven track record in balcony solar⁢ systems for guidance on the best ⁢solutions.

**Editor:** Thank you, Bernd, for sharing your insights! For our readers, we’d like to hear your thoughts: Would you consider installing solar panels on your balcony? What factors would influence your ⁣decision? Let’s start a conversation in the comments below!
