Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler (Greens) announced “clear targets” to the federal states on Monday, while Minister of Agriculture Norbert Totschnig (ÖVP) relied on “a discussion of the previous proposal”. A new date is not known for the time being.
Around 20 months have passed since the strategy was announced, and the draft was criticized by NGOs even before it was announced. Greenpeace, for example, criticized the fact that the 2.5-hectare target was mentioned in the federal government’s sustainability strategy as early as 2002, but that a political decision has still not been made. After the adjournment became known, the WWF called for “a credible restart in land policy”.
At EU level there is currently no legally binding policy target related to land take and soil sealing. In the new EU soil protection strategy, however, the individual states were asked to set targets for land use by 2030 – ultimately the goal is to achieve neutrality in land use by 2050.
