Numerous owners have been complaining regarding problems with their SanDisk Extreme and SanDisk Extreme Pro for some time. How Ars Technica reportsmanufacturer Western Digital has now commented on the problem.
It is an error in the firmware. The file system can be damaged if the write load lasts longer. This threatens the loss of all stored files on the device. WD confirms the bug only for the four terabyte versions with the identifiers SDSSDE61-4T00 and SDSSDE81-4T00.

However, there are also reports that the problem occurs with SSDs with a capacity of two terabytes. An Ars Techinca employee was also able to reproduce the error on such a device.
WD, meanwhile, has announced a firmware update for the 4 TB versions. This should be published “soon”. Owners of affected devices should definitely back up their data on another device or in a cloud until the update. Important data should never be stored in just one place anyway.
