Soft Skills: The Key to Success in the Business World

2024-01-24 20:33:33

Felipe Cuadra, CXO and cofounder at Rankmi explained that this is because “there are executives who have technical knowledge and cognitive skills, but poor people management to work in environments with more relationships.”

“Acquiring a good level of communication is not acquired in a couple of months, it is something that takes more time and effort. For reasons of making it profitable and improving the return on investment, priority will be given to bringing in people who have soft skills and do not have much technical knowledge because that is something that can be quickly acquired. Not the skills,” adds Daniel Galdós, commercial manager of Manpower Group.

How are soft skills recognized in a job interview?

It is easy to validate technical knowledge, but not soft skills. Therefore, the recruiter must evaluate the applicant in different ways, to ensure that the skills he claims to have are real.

Felipe Cuadra advises that, before looking for new talent, you define well what you are looking for in the company because “everyone has some soft skills, but not all of them are relevant to the position.”

Subsequently, it must be confirmed that the applicant does have the required job skills. Víctor Mendoza, CEO of Innova Hunting Group, mentions that this is possible when various situations are proposed:

“You should ask how you would react to a situation, what you would do, how you handle frustrations, how you would resolve a crisis. In this way, you can see if you are prepared or handle this activity well on a day-to-day basis.”

Galdós adds that it is important to have several professionals to analyze the applicant’s answers and reach an agreement: “the interviews must have different styles, methodology, actors, to put emphasis on the skills and see if the perspective is the same for “Everyone or they have another approach.”

Soft skills that will stand out in 2024

  • Autonomy: change is constant and company training is less; Therefore, it is expected that the professional can learn by himself.
  • Emphatic Listening: Many managers or team leaders struggle with this soft skill. They may be good at defining, deciding and analyzing, but it is difficult for them to listen without debating. The option of the rest must be considered when making decisions.
  • Frustration tolerance: in the work environment there will always be pressure situations and many people do not know how to manage their emotions.
  • Initiative and self-management: we are looking for professionals who carry out activities without needing to be supervised all the time or without waiting for the boss to tell them what they should do.
  • Curiosity: many employees have the ability to learn, but to do so, training must be carried out; unlike someone who is curious, since they will be constantly investigating topics that pertain to work.

Companies that belong to the banking, health, customer service and retail sectors are the ones that most request that these soft skills be found in the staff because stressful situations can arise on a daily basis, since they have contact permanent with clients.

Ways to boost skills in hired personnel

The leader of Rankmi mentions that there are three phases in which soft skills can be acquired and transmitted to personnel already within the company.

  • Teaching: the company can carry out training on soft skills, situations in which they should be applied, how to form bonds, etc.; but only 10% of attendees will stay with this knowledge. It is important that there is a superior who reminds them to apply what they have learned.
  • Modeling: staff can acquire soft skills through imitation; For this reason, it is important to hire personnel who have these skills, since others can copy the positive. 20% acquire knowledge this way.
  • Experience: 70% of people who put soft skills into practice in the workplace on a daily basis maintain what they learned permanently.
