A protest by Sofia taxi drivers on Friday brought traffic to a standstill at Terminal 2 of Sofia Airport. The drivers are demanding changes to a new traffic management system implemented on January 9th,wich they say is unfairly penalizing them.
The crux of the issue is a restriction on vehicle access to the free-access zone within the terminal area. Drivers are only permitted to enter once every hour. This means if a driver picks up two passengers within that 60-minute period, they are charged a fee.
“It’s simply not fair to penalize drivers for providing a service,” said Krasimir Tsvetkov, chairman of the national taxi union,in an interview with Archyde. “The new system is damaging our livelihoods, costing us as much as one fare just to enter the parking lot,” he added, highlighting the significant financial impact on drivers.
Adding fuel to the fire, the fee implementation was brought forward three days earlier than announced, further enraging drivers who feel ignored by the airport operator. “The lack of transparency and interaction from the airport operator has only fueled the anger and frustration among drivers,” Tsvetkov explained.
Drivers also allege that the fee structure violates competition laws and have filed complaints with relevant authorities.
The taxi union is calling for a meeting with the airport concessionaire to negotiate a fairer system. “We are simply asking for a system that is fair and transparent,” Tsvetkov stated. “One that allows us to earn a living without being penalized for providing transportation services to passengers.”
The protest, met with increased police presence at the airport, has forced travelers to seek alternative transportation options, discouraging the use of personal vehicles.
The standoff highlights the ongoing tension between airport operators and taxi drivers worldwide as new technologies and regulations reshape the transportation landscape. It remains to be seen how this conflict will be resolved, but the demands for transparency and fairness resonate beyond the borders of Sofia.

What option solutions could airport authorities implement to address taxi driver concerns while ensuring efficient airport operations?
Sofia Taxi Drivers Protest: A Demand for Fairness at the Airport
Sofia Airport’s new traffic management system has sparked outrage among local taxi drivers, who argue it unfairly penalizes them. We spoke with Dimitar Petrov, a veteran taxi driver and spokesperson for the Sofia Taxi Drivers Association, to understand their concerns.
A Stifling New System
Archyde: Mr. Petrov, thank you for speaking with us today. Can you explain the core issue driving the taxi drivers’ protest?
Dimitar Petrov: Certainly. The problem lies with the new traffic management system implemented at the airport. essentially, it restricts our access to the drop-off zone within the terminal.we are only allowed to enter once every hour, regardless of whether we have passengers to pick up.
Imagine this: a driver finishes dropping off a passenger outside the terminal and is ready to enter for a new pick-up just a few minutes later. But because the system’s timer hasn’t reset, they face a hefty fee for re-entry. This effectively punishes us for providing a service and makes it incredibly difficult to make a living.
Financial Burden and Lack of Consultation
Archyde: How notable is the financial impact of these new restrictions?
Dimitar Petrov: Its significant. This fee can amount to the cost of a whole fare! Add that on top of rising fuel prices and the general cost of running a taxi, and it puts a severe strain on our income. The airport operator has shown a blatant disregard for our livelihoods.
To make matters worse, the implementation of these fees was brought forward by three days without any prior warning or consultation with the taxi driver community. This lack of clarity and interaction has only deepened the resentment and frustration we feel.
Seeking a Fair Resolution
Archyde: What are your primary demands from the airport operator?
Dimitar Petrov: We are seeking a fair and transparent system that recognizes the vital role we play in providing transportation services to passengers. We demand a system that doesn’t unfairly penalize us for doing our job.
The principle is simple: allow us to earn a living without excessive fees that restrict our ability to serve the traveling public. We are open to discussing reasonable and practical solutions that benefit both the airport and the taxi drivers.
Archyde: The protest has caused significant disruption to airport passengers. Do you have any message for them?
Dimitar Petrov: we understand the inconvenience caused by the protest, but we hope they can understand our concerns. We are not against progress, but we demand it be implemented fairly. We urge them to join us in calling for a resolution that is beneficial for everyone involved.
