Sofia Goggia’s Victory at Altenmarkt-Zauchensee & Swiss Disappointment: Race Recap

2024-01-14 07:39:12

The Altenmarkt-Zauchensee descent, won by the Italian Sofia Goggia, did not please the Swiss. The best of them, Lara Gut-Behrami, had to settle for 6th place.

Still in contact with the best at the last intermediate score, Lara Gut-Behrami lost 0”34 to Sofia Goggia in the last 12 seconds of the race. The Ticino, victorious on this same track in 2022 in downhill, finally finished 62 hundredths behind the Italian and 0”28 from the 3rd step of the podium shared by Mirjam Puchner and Nicol Delago.

Three other Swiss women finished in the top-15 of this 3rd downhill of the winter. Also comfortable on the long sliding section at the top of the course, Michelle Gisin ranked 8th, 0.70” from the winner. Priska Nufer took 10th place and Jasmine Flury 11th, while Corinne Suter was eliminated following a line error. Fribourgeoise Noémie Kolly suffered the same fate for her return to the World Cup, almost a year following her last appearance at this level. Also note the spectacular fall of Kajsa Vickhoff Lie, 2nd in the super-G.

18th downhill victory for Goggia

Beaten in the discipline both in St-Moritz (2nd) – where she won in Super-G – and in Val d’Isère (4th), Sofia Goggia recovered perfectly following having fallen the day before in Super-G . She thus achieved her 24th World Cup success, the first of the season in downhill, beating the astonishing Austrian Stephanie Venier (2nd) by 0”10.

The 2018 Olympic champion now has 18 victories in the premier discipline on the White Circus, making her No. 4 in history among the ladies ahead of Ticino’s Michela Gigini (17). She is also taking off in the specialty World Cup: her margin over her first pursuer, Jasmine Flury, is 93 units.
