“Sodra”: the youth unemployment rate has been increasing in recent years | Business

“Unemployment among young people has always been higher, and if we look back about 5 years, we would see that there are fewer recipients of unemployment benefits among the elderly, and more among the young.” During the pandemic, the situation worsened and youth unemployment increased even more strongly than in other age groups, and since then, for the last few years, not only here, in June, we estimate that youth unemployment has increased,” K. Zitikytė told LRT radio on Thursday.

According to her, the number of young people receiving unemployment benefits, which increased by 5 thousand during the year, is a significant indicator, which is mostly determined by the slower growing economy this year.

“This is a considerable number, the economy is growing more slowly this year and we have slower hiring of employees. And if we look at the sectors in which young people work, then in the districts, young people work more in transport and manufacturing, and it is precisely in these sectors that the number of layoffs has increased,” explained K. Zitikytė.

K. Zitikytė also emphasized that it would be wrong to think that unemployment benefits are only received by those young people who, for example, decide not to work after doing something they don’t want.

“We see that there are also young people who worked in information and communications, programming activities, certainly in those sectors that young people want to enter, they work there, we would find every third working young person there, but also in the group of these sectors, we also see that youth unemployment is larger and more frequent job changes than older workers tend to do,” she said.

According to the data of the Employment Service, registered unemployment increased by 0.1 percent in July. point to 8.6 percent, and on August 1, a total of 156.5 thousand were registered. unemployed – 1.2 percent. or 1.8 thousand persons more than a month ago.
