Social Welfare highlighted the most important achievements of the Disability Program

Through the Sub-Secretariat for Populations and Ethnic Groups, the Secretariat for Social Welfare informed the community of the balance of its management for comprehensive care for the Population with Disabilities, PCD, in Santiago de Cali, since May 2022.

Among the most outstanding actions are:

  • 4,974 PWD assistance in project registration and service route (5 service channels).
  • 436 PWD attended with psychosocial guidance in the territory
  • 1 Itinerant Schools strategy implemented to benefit 400 PWD, families and their caregivers
  • Families and caregivers involved in updating the Public Policy
  • 9 Local Disability Committees strengthened and accompanied

In relation to this last point, the Secretary of Social Welfare, María Fernanda Penilla Quintero, stated: “We are currently updating the Public Policy on Disability, working very hard hand in hand with the Local Committees on Disability; We have worked with businessmen and with the different organizations of the District of Santiago de Cali, generating actions for the benefit of this population”.

Likewise, the implementation of the Itinerant Schools strategy was highlighted, with which work is being done to strengthen the network of caregivers to support, make visible and dignify this important work.

The Undersecretary for Populations and Ethnic Groups, Mauricio Rivas Nieto, pointed out: “It is a strategy where we go to the site or we go to the place where they meet in small groups, a pair of two psychologists, and we accompany this caregiver who meets other caregivers, but also with the people with disabilities with whom they work. This is a strategy that has been very well received, more than 270 families have already benefited and we expect to have more than 400 or 450 by the end of the year”, he pointed out.

The official also highlighted the support that has been given to the different ventures: “We have received requests for entrepreneurship support where we are going to be attributing, I think, regarding 40 ventures for people with disabilities, especially with caregivers who may have a benefit economic”, added the undersecretary, during a Facebook Live of accountability.
