Social Welfare accompanies the National Government project to eradicate hunger in Colombia

With immense joy and enthusiasm those attending the National Congress of Community Pots From the Garden to the Pot and from the Pot to the Territory received the announcement from the Minister of Agriculture, Cecilia López, regarding the commitment that the orchards, pots and community kitchens will be part of a national policy whose objective is to eradicate hunger.

At the event, held at the Orquideorama in Cali, the Secretary of Social Welfare, María Fernanda Penilla Quintero, also expressed her approval of the Ministry’s announcement, which has the purpose of guaranteeing food security throughout the national territory. “The Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Cecilia, has promised that the projects that have been presented here and the forms of fight once morest hunger such as: pots, restaurants, kitchens and orchards will be included in the Development Plan, through a Public Food Safety Policy”.

This Policy would be aimed at ensuring the right to food, protection once morest hunger and malnutrition; as well as the promotion of security conditions and food sovereignty. For this reason, in this meeting the representatives of popular and regional peasant organizations, through four reporting tables, presented the proposals that they ask to be included in the Policy that is under construction.

“The fundamental request is that the popular economy be included in the National Development Plan; that agrarian, peasant, popular organizations, mothers head of households and collectives be allowed to contract the execution of projects. This to the extent that, during the social outbreak, it was the popular organizations that took the pots to the streets and raised resources to alleviate the hunger of the people,” said John Jairo Hernández, representative of the Reporting Table, Southwestern Region.

Mauricio Rivas, Undersecretary of Populations, explained that Cali leads a very significant experience that must be taken into account in this work for food security that has been growing. “In the government of Dr. Jorge Iván Ospina, we went from 400 community kitchens to 762, almost 20,000 people fed daily,” said the official.

Melodía Fernández Rivera, who is part of the National Network of Community Pots Platico a Platico, pointed out that the project, mainly, must consider the peasant. “It must take into account a circular economy approach in which it is the organizations that execute, hire and are in charge of the transparency processes”, she argued.

Paola González, a member of Artefacto Social, La Olla Rodante, explained: “what we want to do is a new story of the city working collectively and in solidarity, which is that pedagogy that we manage inside the pot, that we can all do from our capacities”, indicated the social leader.
