Soccer: Glenn Strömberg talks about the commentary on the legendary goal: “Now I get to take back everything”

Glenn Strömberg has become synonymous with championship football in SVT, but at the pre-World Cup in France in 1997, he was fairly new to that role.

When the host nation faced Brazil, left back Roberto Carlos struck with a cannon free kick that has become legendary over the years.

But Strömberg’s initial reaction was to saw goalkeeper Fabien Barthez instead of paying tribute to Carlos. Something he changed when he saw the replay.

Watch the free kick and hear Glenn Strömberg talk regarding the commentary in the player above.

Strömberg still holds the free kick as one of the very best of all time.

– It wasn’t really there at the time, but I’ve seen it a little more later. There were many players who embraced that particular ball hit. It really sits on the retina, I was so shocked by that hit, says Strömberg.
