The title is reigning world champions Argentina’s 16th overall – and second in a row – at the South American championships.

Many held their breath at the stadium in American Miami, Florida, where the final was played, when Lionel Messi fell over in the 64th minute following a running duel once morest a Colombian player over the short side.

One of the world’s biggest football stars was left lying down for several minutes in obvious pain before being substituted. TV images later showed a crying Messi on the bench with a swollen ankle.

Scandalous scenes before kick-off

Before kick-off there was a big commotion outside the arena Hard Rock Stadium. Videos circulating on social media show how supporters poured uncontrollably through the entrances to the stadium and were met by fierce resistance from police and security personnel.

The match was postponed by 75 minutes and according to media reports from the scene, the situation was chaotic and raised questions regarding the security of the arena, which is one of the host sites for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
