In the bronze medal match, Germany was waiting with an in-form cage keeper in Ann-Katrin Berger.

It was also the Germans who got the first word. In the 65th minute, the Spanish goalkeeper Cata Coll came out wrong – and had Guilia Gwinn down in the back.

The striker managed the penalty well – and with 25 minutes remaining, Spain were under pressure.

Chance to equalize at the last moment

In the 97th minute, however, Lucia Garcia was brought down in the German penalty area and the hope of an Olympic medal was rekindled.

The star Alexia Putellas stepped forward, but with the odds against her. This as Berger already saved several penalties during the championship for Germany.

Berger was rock-solid and flung himself in the right direction. Then the referee blew the match off. Then several of the Spanish players were in tears and Putellas had to be comforted by his teammates.
