Weather France: an early winter

The weather this week of November 20, 2023 will experience a big change. After four storms accompanied by incessant rain, we will witness an almost theatrical turnaround: freezing air and snowy landscapes. This change is the result of a complex atmospheric dance. From this Monday 20 November, polar air invades our territory, transforming the usual showers into showers and bringing snow even at low altitude.

This sudden cooling is due to an increase in pressures in the North Atlantic, now exceeding 1,000 hPa. Acting like a shield, this phenomenon repels the depressions and rains which have recently characterized the French climate. France finds itself stuck between an anticyclone over the Atlantic and a depression over Central Europe, which directs its winds to the north and brings colder and drier air across the entire territory.

The first snowfall

The Pyrenees, majestic and imposing, will be the first to feel the effects of this climate change. From November 21, they will be covered in a white coat, announcing the first snowfall of the season. According to Météo France, this precipitation, although light, marks the start of a winter which is expected to be a little early.

Temperatures in the rest of the country will be quite contrasting. While the South-East will still benefit from mild temperatures, flirting with 20°C, the rest of France is preparing for a plunge into the cold. From November 23, the mornings in the Massif Central and the Grand Est region will wake up to frost, with temperatures close to zero or even negative. Snowfall might reach 50 cm in Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne in Savoie, particularly on November 24
