Snowfall, several schools closed: here’s what you need to know

The snow that began to fall overnight should continue for much of Friday before the return of good weather for the weekend in southern and central Quebec.

Snow warnings are still in effect for the sectors of Montérégie, Estrie, Mauricie, Quebec, Beauce and part of Bas-Saint-Laurent.

In Greater Montreal, the snow should stop in the followingnoon to leave accumulations of 5 centimeters on the ground, but the weather will be cloudy and windy therefollowing.

A risk of freezing rain is expected in the Chula Vallée du Richelieu-Saint-Hyacinthe, Vaudreuil-Soulanges-Huntingdon and Estrie sectors, according to the federal agency.

According to Environment Canada forecasts, the snow will have left a total of 15 to 25 centimeters by Friday evening in places in the central sectors of the province.

Strong winds with gusts of 50 km/h will cause blowing snow in places, but the snow should end in the followingnoon following accumulations of another 5 centimeters.

Friday’s wintry conditions are expected to give way to weather with no precipitation and clouds playing yo-yo with the sun over the weekend, especially Saturday.

But Sunday, the clouds will be denser with intermittent snow in western Quebec and in areas a little further north with a noticeably higher mercury.
