You may have already noticed one of the new dials on the watchOS 10 features the iconic comic book character Snoopy and your partner Woodstock. In addition to being present in several Apple TV+ productions, the friendly dog is “starring” on Apple Watches — just as Mickey Mouse has done, for example.
What the images didn’t reveal, however, was the creative process behind the creation. It is worth remembering that there are several displays with the character and that they are dynamic: when the user goes swimming or sleeping, for example, Snoopy is displayed in a diving suit or with the Moon, in a very dynamic way.
The dials are the result of a partnership between Apple and Charles M. Schulz Studio, which owns the rights to the character and comics. According to an interview given to GQ by Paige Braddockcreative director of the studio, and Gary Butcherhuman interface designer at Apple, it was an incredibly thorough process and very permeated by creativity.
Braddock joked that, right before the first meeting, faced with the differences between creating faces for the Apple Watch and designing an analog watch, she thought she herself wasn’t even “smart enough” to use the device. As Snoopy is originally a static character, there were even more challenges in creating the displays, focusing on the dog’s arms and hands areas, always in a very detailed way.
At this first meeting — which was the Watch team’s first in person following the pandemic — 148 sheets of paper were placed on the table, with the idea of creating that number of animations to be shown. Although the sheets were not filled in at first, a real storm of ideas occurred at that moment, essential for the 12 minutes of total animation to be generated.
Initially, more generic situations were thought of to insert Snoopy on the display. However, as the creative process progressed, the bright and colorful display of the Apple Watch proved to be a true canvas, into which more special and defining elements of the dog were inserted, such as the act of protecting Woodstock from the rain.
The challenge for Apple, then, was to create animations that were optimizable and visible to users. To this end, the company created a scene composition engine that can rotate images by six degrees per minute. A decision engine was also included in the system that ensures that the figures displayed are not repeated too much in a short space of time.
The result, therefore, are these friendly dials that also carry the changes that Snoopy went through over time — acquiring more human habits — and which have been followed by several generations. It was, as we can see, a beautiful symbiosis between the studio and Apple, combining a lot of innovation with the designs and the meaning of the character in a very fun way.
