## SNL’s Weekend Update: Jokes Don’t Fly With Everyone
(Intro Music)
**Host:** Welcome back. Joining us tonight to discuss SNL’s latest “Weekend Update” and its satirical take on current events is comedy writer and pop culture commentator, Sarah Lee. Sarah, thanks for being here.
**Sarah Lee:** Thanks for having me.
**Host:** “Weekend Update” certainly didn’t hold back this week, poking fun at everyone from former President Trump to current figures like Pete Hegseth and President Biden. What are your thoughts on their takes?
**Sarah Lee:** Well, “Weekend Update” has always been a platform for sharp political satire, and this week was no exception. They tackled some pretty hefty topics, including Trump’s supposed attempt to crash the Notre Dame reopening, which was both absurd and hilarious.
**Host:** Right, that bit was certainly eye-catching. Do you think the jokes landed?
**Sarah Lee:** I think they did, at least with the intended audience. “Weekend Update” has a long history of targeting Republicans and conservative figures, and this week was no different. Whether you agree with their politics or not, you have to respect their willingness to tackle controversial subjects head-on.
**Host:** What about the jokes aimed at President Biden?
**Sarah Lee:** They kept things relatively light with Biden, focusing more on his age and occasional gaffes rather than his policies. It’s a balancing act for “Weekend Update,” trying to be funny without alienating viewers who might be fans of the president.
**Host:** Do you think “Weekend Update” has become more politically charged in recent years?
**Sarah Lee:** It’s undeniable that the political climate has become more polarized, and that certainly influences comedy. “Weekend Update” is reflecting that reality. [ [1](https://www.nbc.com/nbc-insider/watch-weekend-update-new-snl-season-49) ]
