Back at the office, you may already be thinking about your next vacation. There will be many promotions this month, SNCF will sell 200,000 OUIGO tickets for travel to France for up to 19 euros. Air France offers discounted tickets to Miami or Montreal. For these brands, the choice is by no means insignificant.
Although they haven’t returned to the office yet, some French people have already started planning their winter vacations. This is what we call “early booking”, and it’s happening more and more. Others just want to extend the summer by going away for a weekend in September.
“We can assume that these companies want to fill their planes in September”
Travel companies know this, too. They run promotions like this every year, explains Nacima Ouralmoune, a professor of marketing at Kedge Business School. “There’s a slight psychological aspect to ‘we’re still in this together.’ Extending a vacation or being away is a bit like therapeutic discourse, which can be an interesting angle for brands to take, which is the ‘there’s no need to get blue, let’s start over’” side of things, she explains.
But the month of September 2024 is also a bit special. Due to the political situation in France and the Paris Olympics, the summer season was not as good as expected for airlines. Liligo spokesman Guillaume Rostand estimated that they may be struggling to make up for the delay.
“We (checked Liligo, editor’s note) and the situation in July is very consistent with what the DGAC says, which says that ticket purchases are 5% to 7% lower than last year. It does not seem much, but we can imagine that the volume of tickets is very high and we can assume that these companies want to fill their planes in September”, explained a spokesperson for the platform.
So if you’re one of the 27% of French people who take a holiday in September, keep your eyes peeled, as this year’s sales may be bigger than in previous years.
