In 2024, public authorities should once more not receive money from the SNB for the second year in a row. The issuing institute announced last week a loss of 12 billion francs in the third quarter of 2023, which reduced profit over nine months to 1.7 billion.

To be able to distribute money to the Confederation and the cantons, the central bank would need to make a profit of more than 40 billion francs in the last quarter. Which seems very unlikely. A situation that angers public authorities. On the one hand, because they have become accustomed over the years to this windfall which can reach up to 6 billion. On the other, because if the public authorities receive nothing, money has been flowing freely to the banks for more than a year.
