Qualcomm just announced the chipset Snapdragon 8 Elite which will be used by Android flagship phones. This chipset not only offers faster performance but also longer Android updates.
At the recently held Snapdragon Summit, Qualcomm Senior Vice President and General Manager of Handsets Chris Patrick confirmed that the Snapdragon 8 Elite supports Android operating system updates for eight years.
Android expert Mishaal Rahman added that this support covers the Android version currently used. This means that Android phones with Snapdragon 8 Elite can receive operating system upgrades of up to seven generations.

This is certainly good news for Android users who want their flagship phones to last longer for years, and for vendors who want to support their phones as long as possible. Currently, only Samsung and Google have committed to providing Android upgrades for up to seven years.
But that doesn’t mean that all cellphones that use Snapdragon 8 Elite will automatically get Android operating system updates for up to seven years. Cellphone vendors are still adjusting the board support package (BSP) Qualcomm with their own Android skins and features.
Currently, there are still many Android cellphone vendors that only offer one generation of Android updates and security updates for three years, such as Sony, ZTE, and Motorola, as quoted from Android Authority, Tuesday (22/10/2024).
In fact, Qualcomm chipsets have supported at least Android operating system updates for four versions and security updates for four years since 2020.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite is built with TSMC’s 3nm fabrication process, which is claimed to significantly improve power efficiency and performance. One of the biggest changes is the use of a new CPU architecture called Oryon.
This chipset is claimed to have an increase in CPU performance of up to 45% for single-core and multi-core, as well as an increase in graphics performance of up to 40%. Efficiency is increased by 44% with NPU which boosts AI performance by up to 45%.
Snapdragon 8 Elite will be used on flagship phones belonging to Samsung, Realme, Xiaomi, Vivo, Honor, OnePlus, and others. Let’s just wait for announcements from each vendor to find out what Android update support will be offered.

Just because the Snapdragon 8 Elite carries this shiny promise of longevity doesn’t mean every phone rocking it will automatically be doused in updates for the full eight years. Nope! Device manufacturers are still tasked with mixing Qualcomm’s board support package (BSP) with their own custom Android skins like it’s a culinary competition. When you hear “custom skin,” just know that “Will this still be relevant in three years?” is the million-dollar question!
Let’s not sugarcoat it—there are still a plethora of vendors out there, like Sony, ZTE, and Motorola, who seem to operate on a once-in-a-blue-moon update schedule. Currently, these guys are only serving up one generation of updates with a side of three security updates. That’s hardly the buffet one would expect from a flagship phone, now, is it?
