A fire broke out on Monday followingnoon in a snack bar in the Brussels municipality of Schaerbeek, Brussels firefighters said. Three people were slightly injured and one of them had to be taken to hospital for treatment. The other two were taken care of on site.

The fire broke out around 1:45 p.m., in the chip shop part of the establishment located on Avenue Gustave Latini. The fire spread quickly, causing smoke to billow into the apartments above.

“When our teams arrived on the scene, we evacuated the manager,” said Walter Derieuw, fire department spokesperson. “A lady had taken shelter in an interior courtyard and was able to stay there, but we evacuated a lady from the third floor using a ladder, because the stairwell was completely smoked. »

The manager was taken to hospital for smoke intoxication and minor burns, while the other two people were treated on scene. Firefighters quickly brought the fire under control, but the snack bar suffered significant damage and had to close its doors at least temporarily. The apartments located upstairs were able to be released following ventilation and verification of the presence of CO by the firefighters.

The cause of the fire was accidental, they said.
