Endurance test, part 3: The VW Golf Variant impresses with great driving comfort and offers plenty of storage space.
Who likes to say goodbye, even if, as in our case, it only concerns one car. After three months and around 10,000 kilometers, we, the SN sports editors, had to hand in our long-term tester. When you experience so much together, you just grow together. The VW Golf Kombi, i.e. Golf Variant, as it is called in Volkswagen-speak, has taken us to the Alpine Ski World Cup across Central Europe, to the Nordic World Championships in Slovenia and to numerous interview appointments and press conferences in and around Salzburg.
The conclusion is consistently positive
We had no breakdowns, no problems and at the same time we had a lot of fun with the 150 hp all-wheel drive all-rounder. We were impressed by the comfortable chassis and the exceptionally large trunk for this price and model class. We were less able to make friends with the low seating position (perhaps this is also due to the advancing age) and the infotainment system. As tidy as this Golf looks in every respect, the operating concept is just as complicated. Forgoing conventional switches is certainly not for everyone. Or is that also a question of age? In any case, when operating the touchscreen monitor, we were sometimes distracted by the traffic, which shouldn’t be the case.
Back to the positive findings
The driving comfort does not need to shy away from comparison with higher-priced models. It doesn’t matter whether you’re driving at high speed on German autobahns or leisurely on miserably asphalted feeder roads in the mountains – the VW Golf Variant is available for everything thanks to its adaptive chassis and all-wheel drive. Driving fun is also not neglected if you select “Sport” instead of “Comfort” in the driving mode.
The VW Golf Variant is already an all-rounder when configuring the vehicle
Three engines (petrol, diesel and mild hybrid eTSI) are available. The entry-level engine is a 110 hp petrol engine, which like all petrol engines can also be ordered as a mild hybrid eTSI. Among the favorites in the engine department are undoubtedly the 150 hp units – as tested by us. The two-liter four-cylinder offers an impressive torque of 360 Newton meters and is remarkably economical. VW specifies the consumption per 100 kilometers as 5.3 liters, in fact we were always below 6.0 average liters during the entire test period. Yet another reason why we mourn the loss of the Golf Variant a bit.
