ŠMSM: this year, state-funded places at universities will not decrease, scholarships for students of priority specializations will increase to 519 euros

It is added that the number of places for master’s and doctoral students is increasing. It is planned not to limit state-financed places for applicants to priority fields of study, as long as the applicants meet the requirements. The state plans to allocate 14.1 million for first-year studies. euros (in 2022 – 13.4 million euros). Such a resolution was approved at the Government meeting today, the press release of the Ministry of Education and Culture announced.

“We want to encourage graduates to choose specialties that are very important for the state and the labor market. We aim for more future students to choose pedagogy, information technology studies, nursing, and studies for training officers. Taking into account the labor market data, we encourage future students to choose these priority study programs – we will aim to ensure free education for all applicants who meet the requirements for a state-financed place”, says the Minister of Education, Science and Sports Jurgita Šiugždinienė.

According to the ministry, monitoring the need for certain specializations – pedagogues, computer scientists – this year state-funded study places in educational sciences study programs at universities are increasing by 20 percent, computer sciences – 5.4 percent, mathematics and physical sciences – 4.1 percent.

It is clarified that pedagogy, information technology, nursing and midwifery, training of officials are recognized as priority study specializations.

Some more state-financed places in the study programs preparing pedagogues are also provided in colleges. This year, the number of places for professional studies in the field of pedagogy is also being increased.

As last year, students who have chosen pedagogic specializations – mathematics, Lithuanian language and literature, French, German, physics, chemistry, biology, history, geography, information technology, primary education and special pedagogy – are expected to receive targeted scholarships. The need for these teachers in educational institutions is increasing, informs ŠMSM.

Scholarships in the amount of 319 euros (6.5 BSI) are provided every month for those enrolled in the state-funded bachelor’s pedagogic studies of these specializations and pedagogic associate studies.

It is planned to increase scholarships to 539 euros (11 BSI) for students of priority specializations in pedagogical professional studies and final year bachelor’s pedagogic studies and pedagogical associate studies. Those who have a contract with the municipality, municipal or public school and are committed to working there for at least 3 years in a 5-year period, at least 0.7 full-time, will be able to receive increased benefits.

In 2023, for short degree study programs in colleges that started last year in Lithuania. a total of 100 state-financed study places are planned. Students are admitted to the programs of information and software systems, informatics, mechanics, electrical and electronic engineering, tourism and recreation studies.

in 2023 3.9 thousand is planned to finance studies. for master’s students (3.8 thousand in 2022) and 537 doctoral students (477 in 2022). This year, state funding is expected to be allocated to a total of 391 residency study places: 365 places for medicine, 14 places for veterinary, and 12 places for dentistry residency.
