Smotrich, who also holds the position of minister responsible for settlements in the Ministry of Defense, touched on his boycott and refusal to deal with him by the current American administration because of his extremist and fascist positions, and claimed that “after years during which the current administration chose to interfere in Israeli democracy and personally not to cooperate with me as Minister of Finance.” For the State of Israel, I expect strong joint action from the elected administration in the interest of strengthening economic and trade relations between the two countries.”
He continued, “Trump’s victory brings with it an important opportunity for the State of Israel. “We were one step away from imposing sovereignty over the settlements in Judea and Samaria (during Trump’s previous term), and now is the time to implement it.”
Smotrich added, “There is now a broad consensus in the coalition and the opposition from all parts of the Knesset to oppose the establishment of a Palestinian state that would pose a threat to the existence of Israel.”
He considered that “the year 2025 will be the year of sovereignty over Judea and Samaria (the West Bank). I have issued instructions to the Settlement Directorate in the Ministry of Security and the Civil Administration to begin professional and comprehensive collective work in order to prepare the infrastructure required to impose sovereignty.”
Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper previously quoted settlers as saying about Trump’s victory, “This is a historical point that may not return again.” But Trump’s policy is difficult to predict, and he understands our needs, but in the end he will be held accountable for his actions. In all cases, he is better than Biden.”
The newspaper indicated that Trump was very close to agreeing to annex the West Bank to Israel and that he refrained from doing so following the opposition of his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, who was chief of staff at the White House. During Trump’s previous term, construction in settlements was extensive.
Haaretz newspaper indicated that settler leaders are basing their hopes on expanding settlement to Trump’s former term, in addition to their close relationships with officials in the previous Trump administration and with leaders in the evangelical community that influences Trump.

**Interview with Bezalel Smotrich: Minister of Finance and Settlements**
**Editor:** Thank you for joining us today, Minister Smotrich. Let’s dive right into your recent comments regarding your relationship with the current American administration. You mentioned feeling boycotted due to what you described as “extremist and fascist positions.” Can you elaborate on this?
**Smotrich:** Thank you for having me. My comments were not meant to provoke but to highlight a serious concern. I’ve recognized a lack of cooperation from the current administration, which I believe has interfered in Israeli democracy. My hope is to foster a collaborative spirit that will strengthen our economic and trade ties.
**Editor:** You also referenced former President Trump’s victory as an opportunity for Israel. What specific actions do you envision taking under potential new leadership in the U.S.?
**Smotrich:** Trump’s victory reopens doors for significant advancements. We were very close to imposing sovereignty over key territories, and I firmly believe that with a supportive U.S. administration, we can reinvigorate conversations about that. It’s crucial for Israel’s security and future.
**Editor:** Some critics worry that these positions may alienate allies. How do you reconcile your views with maintaining strong international relationships?
**Smotrich:** It’s a balancing act. While I stand firm on principles I believe in, I also recognize the importance of dialogue and diplomacy. My aim is to pursue policies that benefit Israel while being open to discussions that strengthen our alliances.
**Editor:** What final message do you have for both Israeli citizens and the American administration regarding these issues?
**Smotrich:** I urge both sides to focus on the bigger picture; unity and strong partnerships are vital for our shared future. For Israelis, I will always advocate for policies that promote our economy and security. As for the U.S., I’m hopeful for renewed collaboration that respects our shared values and goals. Together, we can achieve a prosperous future.
**Editor:** Thank you, Minister Smotrich, for sharing your thoughts with us today.
**Smotrich:** Thank you for having me. It’s important to keep the conversation going.
