A Duke Health research team analyzed 3,145 parents of children diagnosed with cancer before the age of 18. Participants answered a survey regarding whether they smoked, drank alcohol, and used cannabis during pregnancy.

As a result of the survey, 14% of the participants reported smoking during pregnancy, 4% reported using marijuana or cocaine, and 2% drank alcohol.

As a result of the analysis, smoking marijuana during pregnancy increased the child’s risk of developing pediatric brain tumors such as medulloblastoma and supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumor and eye cancers such as retinoblastoma following birth. Excessive alcohol consumption during pregnancy increased the risk of developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in offspring, and smoking was associated with reduced neonatal weight.

Dr. Kyle Walsh, who led the study, said, “Over the past 10 years, the number of pregnant women smoking cannabis to relieve pain such as morning sickness has increased. Appropriate medical guidance is needed regarding the potential effects of cannabis use on the fetus.” He said.

Meanwhile, the results of this study were recently published in ‘Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers, and Prevention.’
