The last corona measures are slowly being taken in Mallorca: This includes the smoking ban in the outdoor areas of restaurants and bars. However, further restrictions for smokers are to follow.
The ban on smoking in the outdoor areas of bars has been in place on the Balearic Islands since August 2020. It was part of a package of measures once morest the corona virus. Although almost all other corona measures have now been abolished, the smoking ban on Mallorca initially remained in place.
Date still unclear
According to the “Mallorca Zeitung”, the government has now decided to allow smoking in outdoor catering once more. According to a spokeswoman for the Balearic Ministry of Health, an exact date for the end of the smoking ban has not yet been set.

Most recently, according to a special regulation in the Balearic Islands, smokers always had to stop in one place and were not allowed to walk around while smoking. Theoretically, there was even a minimum distance of two meters to other passers-by. In practice, however, this regulation was hardly checked.
Voluntarily smoke-free premises
At the end of May, the Balearic Cancer Aid (Asociación contra el Cáncer de Baleares) called on bar operators to continue to keep their outdoor areas smoke-free, despite a possible change in the ban. Several bars, cafés and restaurants have already responded to this call and remain smoke-free.
Smoking bans on beaches
Elsewhere, the official smoking ban remains in place: a few months ago, other communities declared their beaches smoke-free zones. These decisions go back to the initiative “Platges sense fum, platges saludables” (“Smoke-free beaches are healthy beaches”) of the Balearic Health Authority. The ban now applies to around 15 beaches.
Extension of anti-smoking law
In addition, an amendment to the anti-smoking law by the Spanish central government, which might thwart smokers, is still pending. This law aims to raise the prices of cigarettes and tobacco across Spain. The government also wants to extend the smoking ban to other places in public spaces, such as beaches, parks, soccer fields, sports facilities and concerts.
Masks are also compulsory in hospitals
In addition to the tilted smoking ban in the outdoor areas of bars and restaurants, the mask requirement in pharmacies, health centres, hospitals and socio-medical centers on Mallorca also falls. When exactly this abolition of the mask requirement will come into force is not yet clear.
