Smith Volleyball Makes History with Three All-American Honors
This season saw the Smith College volleyball program reach unprecedented heights, culminating in a historic recognition never achieved before: three players receiving All-America honors. Taylor Gwynne (Chapel Hill, NC/Carrborro), Abby Hunt (Mandeville, LA/Fontainebleau) and Abby Sweeney (Spring, TX/Klein) were all named AVCA All-American Honorable Mention recipients and earned places on the AVCA Region II First Team.

Her exceptional skills as a setter culminated in over 3,000 career assists, solidifying her second place standing in the Smith record books. This season marked Gwynne’s first All-American and All-Region accolades, cementing her legacy as one of the program’s greats.
Sweeney concluded her illustrious Smith career with a triumphant performance, eclipsing the 1,000 career kill mark during the NEWMAC Championship match. She played a pivotal role in securing Smith’s first NEWMAC title since 2005. Sweeney’s impressive achievements throughout her career have earned her a coveted spot in the top five for career kills. With the addition of All-American to her already impressive list of honors, Sweeney leaves an undeniable mark on Smith volleyball history.
Hunt, a familiar name on the AVCA list, adds All-American to her already impressive resume. Previously recognized twice as Honorable Mention All-Region and crowned All-Region Rookie of the Year in 2022, Hunt continued to excel, driving the 2024 NEWMAC Champions forward. Her standout performance in the NEWMAC Semifinal victory over Springfield propelled Smith to the finals for the first time since 2005.
Smith’s championship victory over previously undefeated #4 MIT in a thrilling five-set match was a testament to the team’s resilience and talent. This groundbreaking win not only secured their first NEWMAC title since 2005 but also marked their entry into the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005. The Pioneers went on to claim their first-ever NCAA Tournament win, defeating Endicott in a closely contested match.
