Smecta, Maxilase… the list of drugs “more dangerous than useful”

2023-12-13 10:56:00

IThere is a good chance that in your cupboards you will find Smecta, Voltarene, Maxilase, Vogalene or even Toplexil. All these medications should be banned according to Prescribe, an independent medical journal considered a reference in health. These are medicines for coughs, sore throats or intestinal disorders, for example.

Among the 105 drugs, 88 are marketed in France and 13 are accessible without a medical prescription. The review even considers Maxilase, a widely used cough syrup, as a placebo. Voltarene and Vogalib are considered harmful because of “an increase in cardiovascular adverse effects. » Another popular medicine, Smecta, used to counter intestinal disorders, is on the list because lead is present in its composition. “Lead has neurological, hematological, renal and cardiovascular toxic effects, and reprotoxic effects, most of which increase with the exposure dose,” notes the monthly.

Some of these drugs, such as Smecta, Voltaren or Vogalene, were already present on the list published in 2022. So, what should we do if our doctor recommends that we take one of the drugs present in the list? The review recommends favoring other options in cases where “treatment” appears “desirable.” »

For more than 10 years, this monthly magazine has shared at the end of the year a blacklist of around a hundred drugs whose benefits are less than the risks. To compose this list, the journal relies on reports from drug agencies or even analyzes published in its columns. The list for the coming year includes 3 more drugs than that of 2023: Palforzia, Evrenzo and Dropizal. The presence of these 105 drugs in the review does not call into question their presence on the market, the authorizations of which are issued by the ANSM (National Medicines Safety Agency).
