A smashed guitar belonging to former Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain (1967 – 1994) has been sold at auction in New York for almost 600,000 US dollars (around 550,000 euros). The estimated value was $80,000, according to auction house Julien’s on Saturday. Accordingly, Cobain gave the black “Fender Stratocaster” to his friend and colleague Mark Lanegan from the band Screaming Trees in 1992. The electric guitar features doodles of the Nirvana band members.

The sale was part of a three-day “Music Icons” auction that will see over 1,200 pieces owned by music greats such as Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Madonna and Michael Jackson by Sunday evening (local time).

A green “Irish Falcon” guitar from the traditional manufacturer Gretsch, which once belonged to the Irish U2 musician Bono, fetched almost $240,000. A black and gold jacket worn by Michael Jackson during his 1992 “Dangerous” world tour grossed $117,000. A bomber jacket that Queen singer Freddie Mercury wore on stage in New York’s Madison Square Garden in 1977 went under the hammer for a good $57,000.
