A $500,000 bid for Nintendo

It’s an amazing revelation that took place last night: Tyler Ninja Blevins, a well-known content creator and streamer in the Fortnite community, reportedly offered to top up an additional $500,000 for the EVO 2019 prize pool of Super Smash Bros Ultimate. An offer that Nintendo would not have followed. It was during a poker evening, organized by Youtuber Ludwig (2.9 million subscribers), with many big names in the industry (Mr. Beast or even xQc) that Ninja made the revelation

All I wanted was to create a massive tournament and stretch $500,000 for EVO. But I wanted Nintendo’s permission first, and they never got back to us.

An offer that probably echoes a tweet that dates from 2018: November 27 of that year, Ninja talks regarding preparing something for the Smash/Versus Fighting community. That’s ten days before the release of Smash Bros Ultimate.

Nintendo, Smash Bros and eSports: what you need to know

If it is difficult to see clearly in this story, it must be recognized that Nintendo has never been very well versed in eSports even with Smash Bros. The quality of fashion In line of the license is often considered by players as catastrophic, while no official tournament has ever really seen the light of day : Consequently, it is difficult to encourage professional players to get involved. An observation that we also notice with the EVO: the event, which organizes tournaments on different games of Versus Fighting, did not host Smash Bros in either 2020 or 2021. The reason? A tournament organized online because of the health crisis, and from which Smash Bros Ultimate had been excluded due to aOnline insufficient. And while the EVO resumes face-to-face this year in Las Vegas, this time it is Nintendo who refuses to participate: it should be remembered that the event flies the flag of Sony since last year.

Despite everything, there is still hope for those wishing for an official competition on Super Smash Bros: last November, it was the PandaGlobal brand which announced a partnership with Nintendo to create an official Nintendo licensed North American circuit for Super Smash Bros Ultimate but also for Super Smash Bros Melee. Hoping that the initiative will continue with a European or even French circuit, even if it already shines with a thousand lights: French Solary player Glutonny became the first European Smash Bros player to win a major tournament in the United States last week.
