“SmartDigiCat: a scientific project bringing together catalysis, data science and AI” – White Paper

2023-04-26 08:30:20

A new so-called “industrial” chair, called SmartDigiCat, was officially launched on August 31, 2022, at Centrale Lille. It brings together players from industry and the academic world. The main ambition of this project is to unite catalysis, data science and artificial intelligence with a particular goal: to develop safer and more environmentally friendly catalytic processes.

Professor at Centrale Lille and head of the VAALBIO team at UCCS (Unit of Catalysis and Chemistry of Solids – UMR CNRS 8181), Sébastien Paul is also holder of the SmartDigiCat chair. He spoke with us on this occasion.

He tells us regarding the origins of this scientific project co-constructed by actors from the industrial and academic worlds. Initially, its creators imagined a robotic, parallelized platform, which would allow a strong acceleration of the acquisition of experimental data.

We also asked Sébastien Paul to come back to the partners of this project, from different worlds. in addition to Centrale Lille, the VAALBIO team and the Catalysis and Chemistry of Solids Unit, the Lille Computer Science, Signal and Automation Research Center CRIStAL, Inria and the companies Solvay, Horiba and Teamcat Solutions.

He then spoke with us regarding the different disciplines brought together within the SmartDigiCat project. It indeed combines chemistry with catalysis, AI and sociology with data science. Our interlocutor comes back to his wish to associate hard sciences and human and social sciences, in order to ensure the various decision-making.

Finally, we have included the SmartDigiCat chair in a schedule with Professor Sébastien Paul. It ends in 2024 and he expects the SmartDigiCat approach to have repercussions on several levels.
