Smart and Varied Electricity Tariffs: The Future of Energy Consumption

2023-06-02 18:12:00

Until now there were day and night tariffs for electricity. Soon perhaps, there will be more… A rate that might vary up to 5 times a day. The goal? Pay less at off-peak times and more at peak times. Here are the details of this project.

Most electricity meters today have a bi-hourly system, which calculates our consumption during the day and during the night. Tomorrow, that is to say from 2026, thanks to a communicating meter, our calculation of energy consumption might vary up to 4 or 5 on the same day, in order to better distribute the energy demand.

“In the evening, when you come home from work and everyone is preparing supper with the hotplates on and the like, you should avoid plugging in your electric car at that time. We will be encouraged to do so. at other times of the day, possibly at night, by adapted distribution tariffs”develops Anne-Elisabeth Sprimont, communications manager for the Walloon Energy Commission (CWAPE).

The idea is therefore to offer different tariffs depending on the time and consumption peaks. There are more electricity demands in the morning segment, between 6 and 11 a.m., and therefore energy would cost more. Since consumption is reduced during the day, in the 11am-5pm time slot, ie the performance time slot of the solar panels, the energy would therefore be cheaper.

At the end of the day, between 5 and 8 p.m., the price would also be higher, because demand is on the rise once more. We can still imagine a rate for the evening, from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. with average consumption, and a price that is therefore more moderate. And why not a special slot for “deep night”, that is to say from 1am to 6am, with much lower consumption and therefore very inexpensive energy.

“We are talking regarding 3 time slots, 4 time slots or maybe 5 time slots. We will analyze different scenarios and different consumers. We will also look at those who do not have electric cars, those who do not have pumps heat… Anyone who might not be able to move loads. And all of that has to be analyzed.”continues the communication manager of the Walloon Energy Commission.

The goal? Motivate citizens through the wallet and vary distribution costs, which represent between 20 and 30% of your bill. And thus save on the 300 or 400 euros per year that an average consumer pays today.

For this, it will be necessary to have a “smart” meter and you will have the choice or not to participate in this incentive pricing.
