Small Office Transformation: More Space, Function & Comfort

Transforming a Single Room Office: More Space, More Functionality, More Comfort

IKEA interior designer Alla Menshchikova tackled the challenge of making a small office space work harder. The existing layout presented several issues: a limited number of workstations equipped with monitors and a lack of dedicated areas for various activities. The designer’s goal was to maximize the space, enhance comfort, and create a more functional environment for the team.

Planning for Purpose: Dividing Zones with Light and Color

“This office, like many others, was a long, square room with lots of windows. When renovating any office, I always recommend first thinking about the overall layout and how the space will be used,” says Menshchikova. “Who needs the most space? Which areas require quiet for focused work? This particular office desperately needed more workstations.”

Menshchikova chose to retain the existing layout but supplement it with clearly defined zones.

Color plays a key role in this transformation. “Given the nature of this foundation, I knew bright and positive colors were essential. But it was also important to maintain a sense of formality,” explains Menshchikova. “I opted for a balanced approach: white and black tones for the furniture, with accents of natural wood, yellow, and green in the details. This combination creates a warm and inviting atmosphere while still feeling Professional.”

The work area takes center stage, with desks thoughtfully arranged to maximize available space. A dedicated rest area invites colleagues and visitors to relax and connect. Comfortable lounge chairs create a welcoming atmosphere, perfect for informal meetings or taking a break. Additionally, the transformation included adding a compact but functional kitchen, a much-needed amenity for the team.

Universal Workspaces: Adaptability for All Needs

The lack of workstations was the most pressing issue. Menshchikova addressed this by creating four spacious work areas, each equipped with a monitor and an ergonomic office chair for comfort and productivity. The

tables used are universal and adaptable, accommodating a variety of tasks and preferences.

“An interesting fact – people often underestimate the versatility of tables,” says Menshchikova. “You can choose not only the color and material of the surface but also

the subframe. For example, adding a subframe with castors makes them even more adaptable, easily moved and rearranged as needed. This creates a highly flexible workspace that can be configured to meet
changing needs.”

The renovated work area offers ample space for the current team, but its design allows for seamless expansion if needed.

At the heart of this renovation is a commitment to functionality. The office, now optimized for both individual work and collaboration, provides a brighter and more inspiring environment for the team to thrive. Rather than a limiting space, it now serves as a dynamic hub that supports their important work.

“I encourage people to think creatively about furniture and space,” Menshchikova advises. “If you have limited space and many needs, don’t be afraid to experiment. Think beyond the traditional use for furniture and embody a ‘dash of creativity’ – for example, integrating elements of kitchen equipment in a well-thought-out way
