Slowness of the SAAQ: “My dog is treated better than my child”

A woman left paraplegic following a road accident in Larouche last March is impatient with the delays of the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) in making the necessary modifications to her home.

Last March, the 31-year-old mother was the victim of a road accident at the junction of the 170 and rue Gauthier in Larouche. She is back at home, with her mother, but the space is not designed for wheelchair travel.

Since her return home last August, Andréanne Harvey has had to shower at the Jonquière hospital, located regarding twenty kilometers from her home, because access to the bathroom, among other things, is impossible .

“My hands barely pass between my chair and the wall,” says the woman in a wheelchair, demonstrating in front of the TVA Nouvelles camera.

The work, which should be supervised by the SAAQ, is very simple; the bathroom door must be removed as well as part of the wall to facilitate access, but nothing has progressed since his release from the hospital.

“It’s a long time,” says Ms. Harvey. “They do studies, but they don’t give answers and all I do is wait.”

The wait also weighs heavily on the mother of the injured woman, who has put her work on hold to take care of her daughter.

“My dog is treated better than my child,” says Isabelle Gaudreault. “My dog asks me for the door to go out and I can open it for him, but my child always has to ask for his mother.”

The SAAQ commissioned an inspector at the beginning of October, who visited the accommodation and is waiting for three bidders.
