Interview with Lucia Kováčová, Head Coach of the Slovak Women’s Under-18 Ice Hockey Team
By Archys, Archyde News Editor
Archyde: Thank you for joining us today, Coach kováčová. The Slovak women’s under-18 Ice Hockey Team recently faced a setback at the World Cup. Can you tell us about the challenges the team encountered during the tournament?
Lucia Kováčová: Thank you for having me. It’s always a privilege to represent slovakia on the international stage, but this tournament was indeed challenging. We faced strong opponents, and while our team showed moments of brilliance, we struggled with consistency. Injuries to key players and a lack of depth in certain positions made it difficult to maintain our momentum throughout the competition.
archyde: How did the team prepare for the World Cup, and were there any unexpected hurdles during the preparation phase?
Lucia Kováčová: We had a rigorous preparation schedule, including training camps and friendly matches against other European teams. However, one of the biggest hurdles was the limited time we had to gel as a unit. Many of our players come from different clubs, and integrating their styles into a cohesive team strategy takes time. Additionally, the pressure of competing at such a high level can be overwhelming for young athletes, and we saw some nerves affecting performance early on.
Archyde: Despite the setbacks, were there any standout performances or positive takeaways from the tournament?
Lucia Kováčová: Absolutely. I’m incredibly proud of our captain,Zuzana Hlaváčová,who led by example both on and off the ice. Her determination and leadership were inspiring. Additionally, our goaltender,Katarína Nováková,had some stellar performances, keeping us in games where we were outmatched. These moments remind us of the potential this team has, and they give us somthing to build on for the future.
archyde: What lessons has the team learned from this experience, and how will you approach future tournaments differently?
lucia Kováčová: This tournament was a learning experience for all of us. We’ve identified areas where we need to improve, particularly in terms of mental resilience and tactical adaptability. Moving forward, we’ll focus on developing a stronger support system for our players, including sports psychologists and more specialized training programs. We also plan to invest more in grassroots growth to ensure a steady pipeline of talent for future teams.
Archyde: Ice hockey is still growing in popularity among women in Slovakia. What message do you have for young girls who aspire to play at this level?
Lucia Kováčová: My message is simple: never give up on your dreams. The road might potentially be tough, and there will be setbacks, but every challenge is an chance to grow. We need more girls to believe in themselves and take up the sport. With hard work, dedication, and the right support, anything is possible. I hope our team’s journey, despite the setbacks, inspires the next generation to keep pushing forward.
Archyde: what are your goals for the Slovak Women’s Under-18 Ice Hockey Team in the coming years?
Lucia Kováčová: Our ultimate goal is to consistently compete at the highest level and eventually challenge for medals. We know it won’t happen overnight, but with the right investments in infrastructure, coaching, and player development, I believe we can get there. This setback has only strengthened our resolve to improve and make Slovakia proud.
Archyde: Thank you, Coach Kováčová, for your time and insights. We wish you and the team the best of luck in your future endeavors.
Lucia Kováčová: Thank you. We’ll keep working hard and striving for success.
