Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico’s health condition is stable but remains “very serious”.
The government announced that the State Security Council will be convened today while the Cabinet will meet from 11.00 (local time, 12.00 Greek time)
Fitzo underwent a five-hour surgery
Miriam Lapunikova, director of the FD Roosevelt University Hospital in Banska Bystrica where the Fitzosaid the prime minister underwent five hours of surgery, with two teams trying to repair the multiple gunshot wounds.
“At this stage his condition has stabilized but it is really very serious, he will be in an intensive care unit,” she told reporters.
“His condition remains very serious.”
Deputy Prime Minister Robert Kalinak said doctors had managed to stabilize Fitzo’s condition overnight and that procedures had been put in place to ensure her further improvement.
“Unfortunately the situation remains very serious due to the complexity of the injuries but we all want to believe that we will be able to manage the situation,” Kalinak said.
According to iefimerida, the incident was the first major assassination attempt on a European political leader in more than 20 years and was condemned internationally, with political analysts and parliamentarians saying it demonstrated the increasingly polarized political climate across the continent.
The gunman shot Fico, 59, during a visit to the Slovak city of Hadlova, seriously injuring him, with the prime minister undergoing hours-long surgery late yesterday.

The perpetrator is a former security guard and writer
Slovak media reported that the alleged attacker, 71, is Juraj Tsindula, a former mall security guard, author of three collections of poetry and a member of the Slovak Writers’ Union. According to the Aktuality.sk network, his son stated that his father was legally licensed to carry a firearm.

The perpetrator is a supporter of the Slovenskí Branci paramilitary group
At the same time, the perpetrator is believed to be connected to the pro-Russian group Slovakian branci. Hungarian journalist Szabolcs Panyi found Facebook posts that purportedly portray Chydula as a supporter of the pro-Russian paramilitary group known for its ties to the Kremlin.
