At the Khalsa Day ceremony in Canada, Sikhs raised slogans for the independence of Khalistan in front of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. At the event, Justin Trudeau continued to speak Punjabi and assured the Sikhs that he would protect their “freedom”.
The Indian media has created an uproar over this statement of the Canadian Prime Minister and slogans in favor of Khalistan.
Justice Trudeau has said that no effort will be spared to protect the rights of more than eight lakh Sikhs living across the country.
Justin Trudeau said that Sikh values are Canadian values. Greater security is being provided to Sikh gardwaras and community centers across the country. Khalistan slogans were also raised during Khalsa Day celebrations on Sunday.
The Canadian Prime Minister assured the Sikhs that the Canadian government will protect all their rights and freedoms once morest all forms of discrimination.
The Khalsa Day event was also attended by Conservative Leader Pierre Poilevier, New Democratic Party Leader Jagmeet Singh and Toronto Mayor Olivia Cho.
Khalsa Day is celebrated with Baisakhi. It is the Sikh New Year celebration. But following the Khalistan movement started in India, this day has also acquired an additional significance.
Chants of Khalistan were chanted at the ceremony as Justin Trudeau made his way to the dais for the address.
