Slight drop in gas and diesel prices, those of petrol unchanged

After rising for two consecutive days, gas and diesel prices fell slightly in Lebanon yesterday following a slight recovery in the price of the pound on the parallel market. Those of gasoline have remained unchanged.

According to the new tariffs published by the Ministry of Energy and Water, the 20 liters of diesel cost 769,000 Lebanese pounds yesterday morning, down from 10,000 pounds. The domestic gas cylinder recorded a drop of 4,000 pounds, selling at 358,000 pounds. Fuel oil used for generators, which have become essential to produce electricity in a country where public electricity is rationed for many hours a day, remained at 1,255 dollars a ton.

Commenting on the new tariffs, spokesman for the petrol station owners’ union, Georges Brax, indicated that the drop in diesel and gas prices is due to the decrease in the pound/dollar exchange rate by 400 pounds on the Free market. The latter stood at 29,650 pounds for a greenback at the time of imports, once morest 30,050 beforehand. He finally noted that gasoline prices remained unchanged because they are calculated according to the exchange rate of the Sayrafa platform, which remained constant.
