Asunción, IP Agency.- The Ministry of Public Health reports a slight decrease of 16 percent in flu consultations compared to the previous week, however, the epidemic curve continues at the alert threshold.
The Universal Surveillance report shows that in week (SE) 40, 24,255 flu consultations were reported, evidencing a slight decrease of 16% compared to the previous week. However, the epidemic curve continues at the alert threshold.
Despite this decline, it is important to access annual vaccination, mainly for children and older adults, because the risk of being affected by circulating respiratory viruses remains in these vulnerable groups.
This week, 306 were hospitalized for severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) in the Sentinel Centers. 59% of hospitalizations correspond to pediatric age, 50% being children under 2 years of age, and 41% to adults, of which 55% are over 60 years of age.
The respiratory viruses identified among hospitalized patients in this period were: Rhinovirus, Parainfluenza and Metapneumovirus, followed by Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), SARS-CoV2, Influenza B and Adenovirus.
Of the total number of hospitalized patients associated with SARS-CoV2 this year, 48% correspond to infections registered in the last fourteen weeks. 33% of these are over 60 years old and 27% are under 2 years old. Of these, 14% were admitted to the intensive care unit and 13% died.
The updated report indicates that 882 boys and girls under 2 years of age required hospitalization due to syncytial virus so far this year; 173 of them were admitted to the intensive care unit and 11 died.
Covid-19
The weekly report indicates that at the end of week (SE) 40, 111 confirmed cases of COVID-19 were identified. The infections are verified in 15 regions of the country; 29% come from the Central department.
This week, 2,214 samples were processed for SARS-CoV2, registering a positivity of 5%.
Some 14 people were hospitalized due to Covid-19, none of them requiring intensive care. The highest load of hospitalizations was observed in the pediatric group. In addition, two deaths from covid-19 were confirmed, both male adults over 60 years of age.
The genomic surveillance report indicates that the SARS-CoV-2 variant, belonging to the Ómicron sublineages, continues to circulate, with the BA.2.86 clade standing out since March 2024. In the last month, the LB.1 sublineage has predominated .X.
