Sleeping in, bad for our health?

On weekends, many French people like to sleep in. However, this little ritual would be very bad for our sleep.

After a hard week of work or school, many are those who want to rest during the weekend. And this desire for rest begins with waking up later or a few extra hours of sleep. This often long-awaited sleepover is for many a moment of relaxation and well-being.

However, it would actually be bad for our body. Worse still: health professionals have it nicknamed “the social jet-lag” its impact on the body is as powerful as jet lag. And these effects on the body have recently been the subject of two studies conducted in the UK and the US.

Inflammatory and intestinal problems observed in followers of “social jet-lag”

The British study published in The European Journal of Nutrition looked at the direct effects of sleeping in on the body. Among other things, the researchers noticed that the people concerned generally had a poorer gut microbiome than people with regular sleep.

Typically, people with social jet lag had a poor diet. However, these two elements are risk factors for chronic and cardiovascular diseases.

For its part, the American study published on the site of the University of Arizona points the finger the notion of “jet-lag” caused by sleeping in. For this, they followed 900 adults and asked them questions regarding their sleep habits. More specifically, they focused on the changes of rhythm caused by stress, sleeping in… And it appears that these generate a real stress for the body equivalent to a round trip Paris-New York in two days.

Should we completely give up sleeping in?

If the jet-lag caused by a trip is temporary and can be alleviated by diet, sleeping in is a real bad habit if it is regular. That doesn’t mean you have to give up. Occasionally, adding a few hours of sleep can help you rest well.

However, it is important to have a regular sleep cycle throughout the week. Indeed, the irregularity of sleep can cause many disorders ranging from difficulty concentrating to depression through drowsiness. Fact, sleep between 7 and 8 hours a day remains the best solution to stay healthy.
