Researchers say that sleeping at least 5 hours a night would reduce health problems that adults over 50 years old may face.
A deteriorating health condition causes sleep disturbance, but lack of sleep may be a sign of health problems.
There is evidence that sleep helps maintain, rest and regenerate the cells of the body and mind.
The study monitored the health and sleep of government employees in Britain, and asked a group of 8,000 participants the following question: How often do you sleep per night? Some put sleep monitoring hours.
They were tested for chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and heart disease over the course of two decades, and the results were as follows:
Those who slept 5 hours or less at age 50 had a 30 percent higher risk of developing various health problems than those who slept 7 hours.
The study found that poor sleep was also associated with a higher risk of death, due to a higher incidence of chronic diseases.
Researchers at University College London and the University of Paris recommend sleeping 7 to 8 hours.
Why do we sleep?
Scientists do not know the truth regarding sleep. But it clearly helps the brain process memories, calms mood, focus and metabolism.
Sleep gives the brain a chance to get rid of waste.
Tips for a good sleep
Tired yourself with work and activity during the day, but reduce the pace as the hour of sleep approaches
Avoid naps
Maintain a monotonous sleeping habit and make sure your bedroom is comfortable, thick curtains, the right temperature and a comfortable mattress, and don’t get caught up in the smartphone in the bed.
Avoid caffeine and alcohol close to bedtime
If you can’t fall asleep don’t force yourself, don’t get nervous, get up and do something to relax like reading a book and then go back to sleep
If you work the night shift, try to sleep a little before the start of the shift, try to sleep following the night shift to rest, and sleep early the next night.
The director of the Sleep Center in Surrey, Professor Dirk Jan Dyck, told the BBC: “This research reinforces the idea that short sleep is not good for us.” It is generally harmful to health, but for some people it is not harmful.
Today, doctors rarely prescribe hypnotics, as they can have strong side effects and may also be addictive.
