Slack increases its prices and improves its free plan

Rise in the price of the subscription, redesign of the free formula… Slack is revamping some of the conditions of use of its messaging service.

Prices had not moved since 2014, starts with souligner Slack to better pass the pill of the price increase of the Pro formula from September 1st. This will cost €6.75 per month (per person) instead of €6.25 for an annual commitment. And €8.25 per month, instead of €7.50, for a monthly subscription. There is no increase for a Business+ type contract.

This increase can be avoided provided that you renew your annual subscription before September 1 (or switch from a non-binding formula to an annual one, and this before the same deadline). However, this reprieve will only be for one year, the new grid will apply from the 2023/2024 subscription.

That’s it for the paid plan, it doesn’t come with any additional services. The substantive changes are for the free plan. His benefits will use it to evolve. Currently you can only read or search the 10,000 most recent messages. This may seem like a lot, but this threshold can be reached quite quickly with talkative users and many active channels.

Similarly, we are limited to 5 GB of file storage per person. To unlock access to the entire conversation archives and double its storage capacity, you must go on a paid plan. This is the reason why we at MacG ended up opting for the competitor Mattermost in self-hosting, following having used Slack quite a bit.

On September 1st that will change, a free user will be able to consult or search in the mass of messages exchanged during the last 90 days. Regardless of the number of these exchanges, it is now a criterion of temporality that prevails. Ditto for the stored files, if they have been there for less than three months, you will have access to them.

In addition, the free formula will open up to exchanges of clips, simple audio or video recordings that are shared in chat channels or in private. Finally, the manager of a free Slack can modify the retention period content, as paid Slack admins do. If it is desirable for messages and files older than 90 days to be automatically and permanently deleted, this will be possible.
