This former Bethesda developer is clear: Skyrim paved the way for all the open world games that followed.

Bruce Nesmith recently spoke to the MinnMax channel during an interview. In it, he looks back on his experience at Bethesda and talks regarding several games he worked on. One of them is obviously the essential Skyrim. For him, the game in addition to being a reference for open world games, it also paved the way for them. It must be said that Skyrim, released in 2011, is one of the first games of the genre to have had such success with GTA.

We proved to the world that open world gaming was the place to be. You can trace the explosion of open world games back to the success of Skyrim.

However, Skyrim is inspired by other games to which we might also give this credit. For example Fallout 3 and Oblivion are both open world and contributed greatly to the legendary RPG. However, although Fallout 3 was voted game of the year in 2008, it does not have the aura that Skyrim can have today. The game received multiple awards and was the subject of a plethora of re-releases on all consoles that followed. Even more, today, one of the most anticipated games of the year 2023, Starfield, the ultimate open world game with 100 solar systems, is itself compared to Bethesda’s best-seller.

Skyrim, as important as GTA IV?

Interviewer Ben Hanson brings up another important point when Bruce Nesmith discusses Skyrim’s legacy. Could it be that GTA IV is responsible for all this? The latter was already an open world 2 years before Skyrim and above all, it gave birth to GTA V, an equally legendary game which manages to compete with the RPG in terms of sales! Both games are still played today and have an equally similar aura. The sixth installment of GTA as well as Elder Scrolls are among the most anticipated games. For Bruce Nesmith, it’s not really comparable:

I would say they were part of it, but I think when you play GTA games it’s a different open world experience. We are not looking for the same type of RPG environment.

He then explains with a beautiful metaphor that GTA surely opened the door to the china shop, but it was Skyrim which came in like a raging bull to break everything. He thus turned the entire video game world upside down and forged an iron dagger into who he is today.
