Once once more, drones are the talk of the battlefields in Ukraine. Thousands of small commercial civilian drones, such as the DJI or Autel models, are used daily for intelligence, to determine the positions of enemy artillery batteries or to drop grenades. But there are also small models that the two belligerents design, even “tinker”.
A few days ago, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry announced the arrival of a new kid in its arsenal, with the SkyKnight. This classic quadcopter features dual rotors at the end of each arm. A sensor is positioned at the front and is accompanied by a camera. This drone for military use is not in the design. Its fairing is minimalist and the batteries are simply fixed above the assembly. Rudimentary, the set is designed to be assembled quickly for mass production. Under his belly, it is possible to carry a bomb of 2.5 kilos.
With such a load, the damage becomes considerable and much more destructive than the grenades of 300 to 800 grams maximum that current drones can carry. The SkyKnight is designed to hit stationary and moving targets. These can be armored vehicles, artillery posts, logistics vehicles and other combat systems. It is also used to hit infantry units holed up in trenches, for example. It is for this type of attack that this type of device is most effective.
A drone equipped with a 2.5 kg bomb
The aircraft is produced by Ukrainian industry and uses common parts with the amateur drone market. On the handling side, the Ministry of Defense explained that if the pilot is familiar with DJI or Autel drones, then he will only need a week to learn to master the SkyKnight. These two brands of drones are precisely exploited massively by Ukrainian operators.
This national creation is essential, since since the start of the conflict, the Chinese manufacturer DJI has decided to ban the sale of its drones to Ukraine and Russia. If the brand’s drones are still widely used, supply difficulties exist. In any case, the SkyKnight remains a consumable, i.e. a suicide drone. If the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense does not give details on its performance, it specified that it integrates an AI capable of making the flight and the strike autonomous in the event of loss of connection. For this, the operator must first have selected his target.
