Tomorrow’s Council of Ministers will lay the foundation for the acquisition of long-range systems as part of the European Sky Shield air defense system. As government circles told the APA, plans for this should be decided and the purchases themselves should start from 2027. This means that Austria’s plans for the full effectiveness of Sky Shield are complete.
Long-range systems with a range of over 50 kilometers are not included in the Federal Army’s ten-year development plan and will be added there as a result of the Council of Ministers’ lecture. At the beginning of July, Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP) signed a declaration of intent to join the air defense initiative initiated by Germany. In September it announced that joint procurement and training with Germany was planned – specifically, the purchase of eight pieces of the German Iris-T medium-range air defense system.
According to “Krone” information (online edition), the US Patriot anti-aircraft missile system and the Arrow system, which was developed jointly by Israel and the USA, should be considered for the long-range systems.
In addition to Austria, 18 other European countries are participating in Sky Shield. The air defense system is intended to protect once morest attacks by drones and threats from military aircraft and ballistic or nuclear missiles.
