The milestone of a thousand convictions resulting from the vast dragnet by the federal judicial police into the world of organized crime in 2021 was reached this week as part of the Sky ECC case, reports Paul Van Tigchelt, the Minister of Justice. , Friday.

This file owes its name to the encrypted messaging used massively by the criminal sector that the Belgian police were able to penetrate in 2021, giving rise to the largest legal action ever undertaken in Belgium. On March 9, 2021 in particular, no less than 200 simultaneous searches took place throughout the territory, while investigators were able to catalog entire criminal networks and their ramifications.

Investigations target no less than 3,627 defendants in 575 open cases, mainly in the province of Antwerp (2,075 defendants and 383 cases).

“In the Sky ECC cases, the prosecutions and convictions of serious drug criminals are constantly linked. Every week, we look at new cases, new defendants, new trials and new convictions”, assures the Minister of Justice, who announces that the milestone of 1,000 individual convictions has been reached. These convictions are distributed across 81 cases, which represents an average of around 12 convicted per trial, specifies the firm.

“It is clear that we are dealing very serious blows to organized crime in our country. We are not only taking many drug criminals off the streets. We are also showing anyone who wants to do the same that a career in this environment is sooner or later doomed to failure”, also warns Minister Van Tigchelt.

The Brussels criminal court will also begin the Encro mega-trial, with no fewer than 129 defendants prosecuted for criminal organization, drug and arms trafficking.
